Lets Talk Cattle Breeds
Do you have a favorite or favorites? For me I have a couple... Charolais Simmental Angus Hereford And I've recently started looking into Shorthorn Cattle Starting next week: Stay Tune: For WHY I picked those breeds, traits and characteristics they carry ......... Talking cattle makes me miss my favorite sweet girl Annabelle She was Holstein/Angus and literally the most spoiled cow ever.. But that's just a reminder that some things on the farm happen, just like in life! That we cannot help or change even as hard as we try! We love our livestock just as much as we love our family The boys were GO, GO, GO this weekend.
Aaron T planted all night long trying to beat the rain MVP of the weekend around Lively H! Everyone at Lively H was running in different directions this weekend, trying to get things done before the rain coming on Monday. Between everyone a little bit of everything was going on bush hogging, raking, baling, combining, driving trucks to port, spraying, planting, combining... EVERYTHING
With less than a month to go in their pregnancy..
The weather is starting to cool down... Daily morning and night feedings, are happening! Preparation of cold weather is putting out straw making them very comfortable and as warm as possible. This last month of their pregnancy is the most important for the growth of their baby/or babies. I am so excited for the first lambing! A little nervous too, because I am so used to cattle, and their calving. Sheep are a bit different, but me and the ewes have got this! The count down is on! Weed of the Week- Week 4
This one was tricky for many, unfortunately you won't find a lucky something in this, not clover! The answer for this weeks weed of the week is Yellow Wood Sorrel! A trick I found when trying to identify is... Yellow Wood Sorrel has heart like shaped leaves, clover is more of an oval Happy national farmers day, to all our local farmers and all farmers! Your hard work and dedication goes unnoticed by so many people! Part of my blog is to help reach those people who do not see all that goes on in the farming life/world and to educate more on agricultural topics that sometimes are misunderstood or always put down! Today I want to thank each farmer for all the hard work, long hours, dedication, feeding and supplying the world with YOUR crops, on YOUR land, or rented land. Even through the obstacles like rain, drought, you still give it your all! Thankful for your families that wait during harvest and know that you'll be home when the field gets finished, or if rain is coming the next day it may be real late. So thankful for all farmers and farms, including Lively H Farms. Defiantly a special place in my heart for my papas farm and the boys including my boy! ![]() A good rain is what we needed... How much rain has everyone got this week so far between Sunday and Monday morning? So thankful for the rain, double crop beans surely needed it, it has stopped harvest around Lively H but won’t keep the boys out of the field for long! Here is what my weather station is showing we got at the house in the photo below! If you guessed...
Common Cocklebur, you are right! Like I said, I tried to find a smaller one to take a picture of to make this weeks a little more challenging for you! Got a little DIY in yesterday,
Made a feeder for hay for the sheep yesterday! Quick and Easy project to keep hay off ground, less waste! Also, good way to reuse pallets! Next Project- a topper on feeder to keep hay dry on days like these! Who is excited for these fall temps?
Who is excited for this rain? Fingers crossed! Double crop beans really need some rain this week! Creeks need refilled, fall gardens, pastures... Also to... save you some money on that water bill from watering livestock, gardens, irrigation.. and more Planter•Mechanic•Harvester•Boss•Farmer
Starts out: the growing season in the fields, long hours, planting. Depending on the weather, to make his crops grow. Putting nutrients back into the soil... making sure the crop has everything it needs to grow. While things are growing... Hours spent on fixing farm equipment Making sure everything is ready to go Doing other tasks like: Taking care of livestock Baling hay Maintaining the fields Upkeep Waterways Spraying Taking grain to port Cleaning bins Oh the list could go on and on... Planting a second crop Harvesting the first crop Planting double crop Harvesting the second crop A continuous cycle❤️ And not to mention the biggest job of feeding the world! During harvest and planting and week on the farm things break, hours are long, things don’t go as planned, prices go up and down, weather doesn’t cooperate.....and more.. Saturday, I was riding with papa and things weren’t going all that smooth.. Reason #1016357 why my papa is my role model! Something broke, he fixed it and kept going. Didn’t let that stop his day, had a good attitude about it, and went on doing what he loves! Everyday there is a new challenge, and he takes it on..because he loves what he does! Not a very happy ram the last 4 days in quarantine. Chops has been separated from his ewes, pretty sure he just has a belly ache and ate something he shouldn't have but wanted to be safe than sorry.
He isn't that happy being took away from his ewes but he should be liking all this attention not to mention the extra feed. When it comes to knowing the weather, it can be very tricky. We all know, it rains when we don't want it to, For example: Say we raked hay and wanted to bale tomorrow, the likelihood of it raining would be 100% Now, I know it doesn't always happen that way but we tend to think that's the way it goes especially on the farm. Just like right now, we really could use the rain, for our crops that are still growing. For example: At Lively H, we are wanting rain for the double crop beans, grass for our livestock, water supply, and the forage (sorghum sudangrass) that we were growing to cut for hay. Those are just a few:) And guess what we aren't getting RAIN, unfortunately , we haven't had a good rain since AUGUST So I thought maybe if we talked weather, maybe we would bring a nice shower in, just kidding but really... This summer I started to use AccuWeather, more! But still not a 100% set on it as my trusty weather guide, so here I am relying on you... When it comes to knowing the weather... What is your favorite weather app? Better question: What weather app do you trust the most when it comes to planning the week on the farm? This photo was taking this summer while we were trying to flag off a plot, and a storm was rolling in
